“The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn’t just one of your holiday games …”

Whether you are naming a cat or simply enjoy cat-themed literature, T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats has a poem for every cat person. The orange title leaf from this 1982 reprint, lettered and illustrated by Eliot, was the cover of the first edition. True cat people may recognize the Rum Tum Tugger, Skimbleshanks, and other cats from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats, which was inspired by Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats.

Eliot, T. S., Gorey, E., & Rouben Mamoulian Collection (Library of Congress). (1982). Old Possum’s book of practical cats. New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich.
